Can I have a Word...

So it's come to my attention, that I either need to make blogging a part of my week, or give it up...I either need to commit or get out.  And I've halfway decided that I want to commit...but I'm not sure I totally crazy in love with blogging.  What happened to emails? and phone calls? to keep in touch.  Now I just write stuff and people are supposed to come to me?!  I don't really know.  It's kinda a selfish way to do things...or maybe not?  Maybe I'm just being weird thinking that I should extend a call or email to a friend, instead of wishing they would come to my blog.  And  maybe I'm using the blog in the wrong way...maybe I should just be writing whatever my little head pleases and posting pictures whenever I have them.  I don't know.  What do you bloggers think?

I think blogging is different for everyone. For me, it's a place to keep out of town friends & family members updated on the everyday happenings in our life. Not the things I would normally email or call everyone about, but it makes them feel like a part of our life when so many of us are soooo busy. I also love the journaling aspect of it, espeically for documenting all my sons milestones because I'm horrible at writing them down somehwere else. Don't quit blogging! It's great to see your cute little family & how you are doing after all these years!! :0)

My blog makes me feel MORE connected to family and friends...but it should be no pressure. Moms with two little girls should only do extras that make them feel energized, not what feels like an obligation. I love seeing your family and will love keeping up with your adventures in Guam!

I think that blogging is great! I know that I love looking at your blog and seeing how you guys are doing. I don't feel less connected, in fact I feel like I know the "current" you much better and I feel like I would be more comfortable contacting you now. I agree that it shouldn't need to feel like an obligation, just whatever whenever! Love your guts.

I agree that blogging is different for everyone. When I first started blogging it was a place to share my pictures and the stories that went along with them, rather than tucking them in a picture album where only a few of my friends and family would eventually see them. I think it's fun to document some of the daily things that go on in our house, vacations we take, whatever it might be. And as time has passed, I've discovered that my blog is a great journal as well. You can go to blub.com once a year and print off your blog onto a nice hardbound book and wahlah, you have a journal. Not to say that it has to take the place of a journal you may currently keep, or take place of phone calls or e-mails. I more think of it as a suppliment to all that other stuff. At the same time, I barely have time to do it with one toddler running around, I can imagine it being pretty hard to find the time with 2 babies and sleep deprivation! But I just want you to know that I LOVE seeing your little family and what you're up too. Especially when you're in Guam! Those of us who will never live in Guam would love to imagine what it's like thru your eyes :) But honestly, if it's not for you, it's not for you. I will still love to talk to you on the phone everyonce in a while and catch up! Love ya!

Hey Nellie! I agree. Our society doesn't write and call like we used to, but if you call me, I don't get to see you and Mike and your darling girls! (Not that I don't want you to call me! :) ) I think you should do whatever works best for you, but I would love it if you kept your blog so that I can keep in touch especially while you are in Guam. I am excited to see you in June!
Jamie.

I don't think it's either / or... if it is, I'm in trouble! I haven't had time lately to post much or to really make my posts as good as I'd like them to be. So for me it's just been to keep people up to date on the family and such.

Plus, if you have a Reader, or alerts set up, you know when you've updated so you aren't checking every day with the same stuff...

I like your blog! Keep it up at your own pace.

I ditto what everyone else has said. I think its a great way for us to keep up on the little happenings in each other's families. Just don't let it stress you out though. =o)

Nellie,

The best thing for you to do (and encourage others to do) is get an RSS reader. You subscribe to all your favorite blogs (family blogs, news sites, parenting blogs, whatever...) and it will tell you when each one has new posts. I prefer Google Reader (www.google.com/reader), but there are other ones, too.

Here are two links to explain it better:

http://commoncraft.com/rss_plain_english

http://www.problogger.net/what-is-rss/

So when someone complains, tell them to get a READER! It's a way better way of keeping up with blogs anyway. I use mine for lots of things I like to read. I divide it by MUST READ (for family and friend blogs, plus a political one and a productivity one) and WHEN BORED (for a gossip blog and a parenting blog and a couple other ones). I ALWAYS keep up with the "must read" and I occasionally just mark all the "when bored" ones as read when I don't have time for it.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions!

Either way, I want to know what is going on in your life.

Well, I'm a cheater because I use Firefox (instead of Internet Explorer) and it automatically provides the feed address for me on any site that has a feed. If you want, I can look it up. If it's not a private blog, send me the web address and I will send you the feed address.
